Tech#file- Contouring & Highlighting & Blushers

Contouring & Highlighting rules

Facial contouring has become the beauty trick of the moments, but it's trick make-up artist have used for years. Using two different hues of strategically-applied, thoroughly blended make-up, you can define and enhance your bone structure. For contouring, I am usually using: concealer one shade lighter and bronzer two shade darker than skin tone. The beauty department assumes that oval shape of the face is taking as an ideal, so everything protruding outside the oval must be covered.

I think contouring and highlighting by Kim Kardashian, could the perfect example.

What to do:
  • Step 1 - Moisturise and prime your face
  • Step 2 - Identify your face shape, there is no one set pattern for contouring as you must follow the natural lines of you face, but above illustration will help define your contour line
  • Step 3 -  First paint the highlighted spots using lighter foundation and a concealer brush. Draw an inverted triangle under your eyes, bringing the two triangles together to the nose to diminish redness in that area. Next, draw a line down your nose, bringing it up to the forehead and across it. Then do the same for the chin. Remember that highlighting is all about drawing light to the areas of your face want to bring out.
  • Step 4- Next apply the shadow areas using the second concealer brush. Start by drawing a line along the side of your forehead, down your hairline, across your jawline up to your chin. Then paint a line in the hollow of your cheeks bones.Next, create a line on either said of the highlighted area on your nose and continuing the line underneath your brow bone. Remember contouring does the opposite to highlighting and brings shadow to the area where you apply it.
  • Step 5 -  Use a foundation brush to buff out the highlighted area as close as possible to the darker lines.
  • Step 6 -  Take the same foundation brush and blend the colours together, working from the outside of your face inwards, pushing the darker tones into lighter areas.
  • Step 7 - Lightly dab dark and light powder using the angled contour brush on the respective spheres, to define further it and give it a natural finish.

Dos and Don't

Don't  contour on a daily basis. Most makeup artists don't recommend it contouring on a day-to-day basis, but if you but if you are attending a big event it's worth the time. Never contour using cream products on the powder, you can use after you set up with setting powder. Otherwise, your make-up will look muddy and cakey. Don't use any make-up with noticeable glitter and a chalky finish.

Do use colours that complement your skin tone. Use contouring selectively and do apply make-up sparingly.

My work

1. My model Vicky has combination, yellow tone skin tone with dark circles under eyes and acne. I think she has heart shape of the face. I prepared the surface by moisturising and applied a primer.

2. Second,  used a foundation around the face by choosing the correct shade for her tone skin. Next, I used orange concealer under eyes to cover dark circles, also some green concealer for any blemishes and redness and blended into the skin. By using yellow concealer, two shades lighter the foundation I highlighted areas on her face- under eyes like a triangle, around a nose, on the nose, in the middle of the chin and forehead. Then applied a two shades darker cream bronzer around hairlines, along the nose on the both sides, jawline, on the cheekbones, temples and under the brow bone.

3. I blend very well onto the skin using the foundation brush. I think I could use more concealer under eyes to more cover dark circles. I set up with translucent powder. After I could used powder bronzer and highlighter for more define the features. This how looks my complete contouring on Vicky's face. Also, I took the photo with professional flashlights.

Below pictures with professional flashlights.

As you can see in the pictures, flashlights mark areas of contouring and highlighting. I should cover more dark circles under eyes. The skin looks dewy and fresh. I also used blusher to warm the skin. Usually, apply blusher beginning from middle an eye and around edges of the nose.
